Pour incarner le rôle de l'écrivain Hunter S. Thompson, l'acteur a décidé de vivre avec lui, et comme lui. Le comédien a cependant été confronté à un problème de taille : l'hygiène de vie du journaliste. Avec Thompson, ils se levaient à 9 heures du soir et se couchaient le lendemain à 17 heures en consommant de nombreuses drogues.
L'histoire raconte qu'en rencontrant le réalisateur Terry Gilliam, Depp portait les fringues de Thompson, lesquelles n’avaient jamais été lavées en 30 ans. Une expérience traumatisante.

Hoskins en est devenu cinglé, au point de voir des personnages de cartoon sortir des murs pour le tourmenter. Il ne travaillera plus pendant une année entière.
Stanley Kubrick a beau être un génie du cinéma, ses méthodes pour tirer le meilleur du jeu de ses acteurs sont parfois quelque peu dangereuses. Shelley Duvall peut en témoigner : l'actrice a terriblement souffert du côté pointilleux du réalisateur, pleurant durant près de 12 heures au total.

La charge mentale était tellement forte qu’il n’a pas pu déconnecter son cerveau de la réalité, et commencé à prendre des antidépresseurs, des somnifères et des analgésiques.
Il décèdera d'une overdose peu après le tournage du film.
Durant un an, celui qui a également interprété Batman au cinéma a dû écouter quotidiennement la musique du groupe de rock et visionner leurs concerts en boucle, pour tenter d’imiter avec exactitude les gestes et mimiques de Jim Morrison. Connu pour prendre ses rôles très à cœur, l'acteur a dormi dans les vieux vêtements de l'icône internationale. Après le tournage, Val Kilmer a révélé qu’il avait eu besoin d’aide pour ne plus penser comme l’aurait fait le personnage.
Quand on joue le rôle d'une femme malade et obligée de se prostituer, il faut savoir faire des sacrifices. Décidément très appliqué (et inconscient), il s'est volontairement arrêté de manger pendant des mois pour atteindre un niveau de désespoir satisfaisant.
Il aura fallu 6 mois à l'acteur pour retrouver un semblant de vie normale.
Si le chef-d'oeuvre d’Alfred Hitchcock a permis à l'actrice d'accéder au statut d'icône, il lui a aussi laissé de lourdes séquelles. Son interprétation lui est tellement montée à la tête qu’elle affirmait ne plus se doucher depuis.
L'acteur aux mimiques si reconnaissables a pété les plombs dès qu'il a su qu'il obtiendrait le rôle d'Andy Kaufman. Totalement cinglé, Carrey affirmait communiquer par télépathie avec le comique décédé, abandonnant au passage sa personnalité pendant toute la durée du tournage. L'ennui, c'est qu'il l'avait aussi oubliée en dehors. Le comédien est allé jusqu’à provoquer pour de vrai l’acteur de catch contre qui il devait se battre à l’écran. Résultat des courses : un séjour à l'hôpital et une belle dépression à la clé.
