Tout commence en 2009 avec la sortie de la bêta d'un certain 'League of Legends Clash of Fates'. À l'époque, Riot Games n'est rien d'autre qu'un studio amateur composés de développeurs du dimanche, essentiellement des fans de Dota et moddeurs, rassemblés par leur passion du mode 'Defense of the Ancients' de Warcraft III.
Les graphismes témoignent de l'inexpérience de l'équipe de développement de League of Legends et le premier moteur utilisé n'est déjà pas le plus abouti à l'époque... Les vieux de la vieille se souviendront d'un bug assez révélateur : lorsque son champion mourrait, toute l'interface pouvait se reboot, laissant parfois de gros pixels colorés !
Véritable prouesse de Riot toutefois : garder l'esprit du jeu intact au fil des années. Aujourd'hui, tous les joueurs de League of Legends reconnaissent le MOBA dans ces images ! Plus rien n'est pareil, si ce n'est l'angle de la caméra et les mécaniques du jeu, mais on reconnaît en un coup d'oeil !
Quelques mois après sa sortie, le MOBA accélère l'implémentation de ses mécaniques de jeu les plus classiques. Les runes débarquent mais les graphismes n'évoluent que peu.
Courant 2010 toutefois, une nouvelle interface bien plus plaisante est lancée. On comprends enfin les sorts et la lecture du jeu n'en est que plus claire. Il y a bien une raison pour laquelle c'est à peu de choses près la même UI qu'aujourd'hui : elle marche !
2011 arrive rapidement et voit la popularité de League of Legends exploser. Face à des millions de nouveaux joueurs, Riot Games recrute à tout va et apporte de gros changements aux jeux : nouvelle interface, nouvelle musique d'ambiance parmi les plus classiques aujourd'hui, jouabilité affinée...
Les menus changent et avec eux, le MOBA se dote d'une fluidité qui lui était inédite. Mais certains éléments du jeu sont buggués, notamment les buissons qui n'affichent parfois aucuns mouvements lors des déplacements des joueurs dedans.
Si les graphismes ne titillent pas les plus beaux jeux de l'époque, League of Legends s'en tire cependant très bien avec la mise-à-jour du moteur graphique. Dès 2012, le MOBA est un jeu stable et visuellement plaisant.
L'année 2013 est marquée par l'arrivée de l'ARAM et de sa map comme on la connaît aujourd'hui, ainsi qu'une mouture graphique plus poussée. C'est à cette époque que la façade de League of Legends se précise vraiment.
En 2014, la map de 3v3 est retravaillée et cette version de la "Forêt Torturée" sera la dernière, restant inchangée jusqu'à sa disparition. Du reste, graphiquement, c'est l'année des VFX (effets spéciaux) grâce à un moteur graphique toujours plus léger et souple.
De nouvelles textures sont aussi ajoutées tout au long de la saison 4.
La Faille de l'Invocateur reçoit un coup de jeune et gagne en modernité, en 2015 : rivière, lanes, effets visuels et ombres/incrustations... Tout le jeu fait un pas en avant.
Surtout, 2015 marque l'année du changement pour les configurations faibles grâce à de nouvelles options d'affichage et de qualité modulable. Avec ça toutefois, des bugs sont découverts.
Les effets de porté de sorts sont aussi changés en 2015 et à aujourd'hui, ces versions survivent tant elles sont claires ! Du reste, il reste encore des progrès à faire sur les monstres (dragons, etc) qui sont rework au fil de l'année. Les bugs sont corrigés au fur et à mesure.
Les graphismes s'améliorent et pour la première fois, en 2016, LoL augmente de façon conséquente les FPS chez la majorité des joueurs.
Gros coup de jeune sur les ombres mais globalement, Riot Games rend une copie qui restera inchangée jusqu'à la saison 12 en 2021 !
Les effets visuels VFX sont plus nombreux et c'est à cette époque que les skins légendaires, avec des animations particulières, se démocratisent à plusieurs champions. Le squelette de League of Legends est sain et chaque update rajoute des petits bonus appréciés !
2017 marque essentiellement l'arrivée en bonne et due forme de la refonte graphique de l'UI. Boutique, écran de mort... Tout est calqué sur le format aperçu quelques fois jusqu'ici. Bien que l'agencement sera amené à changer au fur et à mesure, les fenêtres elles sont gardées quasi telles quelles !
Peu de changements aux graphismes du jeu mais Riot accélère dans l'implémentation de nouveautés.
Les séries limitées de skins Ultimes se multiplient avec à chaque fois des animations uniques, des textures et interactions inédites etc. Pour la majorité des joueurs, il faut cependant se contenter de reworks du Nashor, Dragon et Blue/Red buff !
Passée sous le radar de nombreux joueurs, c'est une petite mise-à-jour du tchat qui passe en 2020. Les graphismes ne changent pas vraiment, si ce n'est qu'une nouvelle stabilité est introduite dans le jeu. Depuis 2020 en effet, le nombre de "bugs splat" dégringole !
L'écran de récapitulation de mort, pour voir les dégâts et leurs sources après le décès de votre champion, est aussi retravaillé. Inséré en 2019, ce dernier était jusqu'alors mal calibré.
À aujourd'hui, League of Legends n'a pas rechangé drastiquement ses visuels. Chaque update apporte certes des améliorations de stabilité, mais le temps des reworks complets est fini.
En 2021, outre les ajouts de nouveaux dragons en pré-saison 12, League of Legends se repose sur la même mouture que depuis plusieurs années. L'interface est cependant changée pour faire avec une boutique de plus en plus chargée !
